It is a new year for North Georgia sports, and the first year in which there will be both a men's and women's competitive golf team.
Achasta Golf Club, located here in Dahlonega and minutes away from the campus, will serve as the home course for the Saint's golf squads. The addition of the two teams is expected to be a boon for not only the school, but also the surrounding golf enthused community.
Coaching both teams will be Tom Fowler, the golf professional from Achasta Golf Club, who has experience in the professional golf world, and Tommy Aaron, an honorary coach who played golf at the University of Florida in the late 1950's before competing on the PGA tour for many years.
Aaron is well known for his victory at the Master's Championship held in Augusta, Georgia in 1973. These two coaches will be great mentors and teachers for the teams during this inaugural season.
Coach Fowler has scheduled a series of events for the fall of 2009 which will test both the men and women, and prepare them for the spring season. Both teams will participate in a total of four competitions this fall, then compete for a PBC Conference Championship, as well as a Division II National Championship, this upcoming spring.
When asked of his hopes and expectations for the upcoming season, Fowler responded with, "I simply want my players to compete as ladies and gentlemen by maintaining a sense of sportsmanship, and playing the game how it is supposed to be played."
Fowler then compared his men's team to the 1980 U.S. hockey team, claiming that his players were a group of guys who had "missed opportunities in the past due to injury," and that they were a collection of individuals he had "hand-picked in hopes that they would meld together and become successful."
The men's team, led by incoming freshman Jake Martin, will begin their season by traveling to Kiawah Island, South Carolina to compete in the Kiawah Invitational held September 7th - 8th.
This tournament will be hosted by PBC counterpart USC Aiken. The women's team, featuring incoming freshman Charley Whitmire, will start their fall season by competing against Anderson in an intercollegiate match-up at Cobb's Glen Country Club, which will take place September 14th - 15th.
Both teams will have their first home matches at Achasta Golf Club on the 13th of October. The men's team takes on the teams from West Georgia and Clayton State, while the women play against West Georgia only.
