Student Smackdown: To-go boxes in Chow
Issue date: 11/20/09 Section: Opinion
Katie Gardner: Chow just took the "to-go" out of to-go boxes.
Many times in my college career I have heard the complaint that Chow hall isn't open late enough, or students don't have time between classes to eat at Chow.
In previous years student have been able to get to-go boxes, but starting this year, you have to request a to-go box 24 hours in advance.
I understand why Chow implemented this policy, but sometimes it's just not possible to plan what you have to do 24 hours in advance, and sometimes it is crowded in Chow and there aren't enough seats, and sometimes it's a nice day and it would be worth it to get your food and go sit on the drill field.
The whole point of a to-go box is flexibility and speed. Planning your schedule 24 hours in advance is not flexible. Having to fill out forms and turn them in every week is time-consuming.
College students are responsible, but sometimes things happen, and it is just not possible to plan things ahead of time, especially 24 hours ahead.
By eliminating the to-go boxes, all students are being punished for the indiscretions of a few.
Simon Zais: To-go boxes are going, going, gone.
Two observations that I'm sure most everyone here at NGCSU have noticed this year: The price of attending this school keeps going up and the Chow Hall no longer allows students to take food out in "to go" boxes.
As upsetting as it may be, it is understandable and actually economical that Chow no longer allows this practice.
The "to go" boxes were implemented for students who didn't have time to grab a bite to eat before going to class. This way they could still eat without having to cut out sleep, or whatever it was that was more important.
The "to go" boxes promoted poor time management and stealing.
If a person is always hungry in the morning before class, they need to take that into account when thinking about what time to wake up, which in turn means going to bed earlier or cutting back on the brews the night before.

To say that to go boxes promote poor time management and laziness is a complete cop out. I was a resident for two years and almost every semester I would have a class get out a 5:00 and a three hour class start up at 5:30--not enough time to sit down and eat in the crowded chow hall. (Continued…)
