Everyone who has ever been to college knows that the first semester isn't always the easiest.

With many new faces, clubs and organizations, it's easy to get lost in the maze. Stressful class schedules on top of the small awkward dorm rooms have left many students "homesick."

However, many have found refuge within the Baptist Collegiate Ministry that meets on campus every week.

The North Georgia Baptist Collegiate Ministry, better known by its acronym BCM, is a weekly reservoir for students on campus. The ministry meets every Monday night at 7:30 followed by student fellowship and activities.

Here, transfer students Trey Hildebrant and Sarah Funk have made a connection both within the ministry and on campus.

"Before I came to the BCM at North Georgia I felt so alone," Funk, who is now actively participating in the ministry and serves every week as the worship leader, said.

"The BCM just made me come out of my shell and get to know people. And the more I met people the more I felt at home on campus."

Funk is a resident of Rabun County and has recently transferred to North Georgia to pursue her degree in Nursing.

"The BCM is such a great opportunity to get involved and to do something with your time and talents," she said.

Hildebrant is a long-term member of the BCM and has been involved with its outreach ministries on three campuses; here, Gainesville and Valdosta State.

"I just love working here," he said. "I feel like this where I belong.

"[They] just welcomed me right on in like I was already part of their family, they put me right to work and placed me where I felt best and where I felt like I could do the most work."

Senior Campus Leader Ken Jones, has been part of the North Georgia Baptist Collegiate Ministry now for more than 30 years and has gotten many opportunities to get involved with many different students over his career.

"This place has always had a goal to reach kids and to do whatever it takes to get connected in their lives." Jones said.

"Trey and Sarah have been such a blessing and such a unique addition to our staff."

Although the BCM is not the only religious affiliated organization on campus, it is one of the largest. The BCM consistently meets with more than 150 college students a week.

These students are involved in many intramural sports on campus and meet off campus at students' houses.

Not only is the BCM geared up for events on campus, it has found a way to connect both nationally and internationally through mission trips and fellowship vacations.

"The BCM has already done so much for me, and [we] have done so much for this campus. I urge everyone to come out and give this place a shot, because here, everyone is family," Hildebrant said.
