This year, NGCSU established the Common Book Program, which requires all NGCSU freshmen to read the same book.

The book chosen was Laila Lalami's Hope and Other Dangerous Pursuits.

Lalami will be on campus Monday and Tuesday March 1 and 2 to read a portion of her novel, speak about her experiences, and sign books as part of the Hoag Lecture Series.

In addition, she will meet with three students recognized for the essays they wrote about the book.

The students are Lyndsay Mercer with "A Change of Heart: A Change of Self," Allison Harris with "Male Domination in Laila Lalami's Hope and Other Dangerous Pursuits," and Lindsay Ellis with "Following the Road to Corruption."

The three will have the opportunity to dine with Lalami during her visit March 2 and have been invited to present their essays during the Common Book Panel at the spring 2010 Student Honors Conference.

Also on Monday, Lalami will be doing a reading of her book at 7 p.m. in the Hoag Student Center Auditorium. Students, faculty, staff and community members are all encouraged to attend.

There is no charge for the reading and lecture.

Lalami will also be do a book signing in the library on Tuesday from 3-4:30 p.m. and to speak about her writing from 7-9 p.m. in the Hoag Student Center.

Topics for the lecture include her background and the events that led to her career in fiction writing.
